I took in a 6 month old beagle who had not been well socialized, had never done any training, and who is a great dog underneath it all. I just needed to learn the skills to bring the good parts out and train the challenging behaviours. Andre is a knowledgeable and compassionate advocate for your dog. He knows why your dog reacts and behaves the way he does, and he knows how to teach owners the skills the need to get the results they want from their dog. I have recently had more challenges with my dog after he bit my young niece. When the rest of the world was telling me to give the dog away or euthanize him, Andre's advice and support was based in a solid background of animal behaviour. His expert advice suggested that my first step should be the vet to find out if any underlying medical problems could have caused his aggressive behaviour. Sure enough, the blood work came back with a low thyroid reading - a problem that has been linked to aggressive behaviour in dogs. With Andre's support and advice, I am well on my way to managing my dogs medical issue. Andre has also recommended a trainer for me to work with on the other negative behaviours. I can't recommend Andre and When Hounds Fly enough. With Andre, you get a highly trained professional...but you also get someone who loves dogs and wants the best for them. That to me is a winning combination.

My 5 year old dog was extremely reactive/fear aggressive. His anxiety about other dogs was so bad that I was completely embarrassed to walk him and was at my wits end - he could not see another dog without going into attack mode, even at a good distance. Other trainers gave me impractical advice (be 'calm/assertive' - but how??!) and had me use techniques that did more harm than good. Andre taught me right away how to manage the environment to minimize outbursts, showed me how to redirect my dog's attention with techniques that actually work, and taught me to read my dog's body language so I know the right moments to apply what we've learned. My dog's reactions are now minimal compared to when we started - he is sometimes able to walk right past a dog on the street without noticing them at all, and he has even made a few canine friends, something I never thought we could do. Positive reinforcement really works, my relationship with my dog is stronger and his confidence is much improved (mine too!). Andre is friendly, patient, committed and knowledgeable, and I really enjoyed working with him - I wholeheartedly recommend When Hounds Fly!

As a new parent to a 3 year old completely untrained and previously abused Chihuahua, I didn't know where to start. This was my first small dog and all training methods that had worked with the bigger breeds I'd owned didn't work AT ALL. After doing loads of research I came across When Hounds Fly and thought that positive reinforcement seemed like the best approach... and it was the best choice I could have made both for my dog and myself. I had moments where I wasn't sure I would ever be able to communicate with my dog, and Andre was there to bridge the gap and show us the way. This method increases the bond between you and your dog as it uses trust and faith (and, of course, rules). Your dog will thank you and the bond between you as a result of this method of training (and Andre's guidance) will last a lifetime.

 Hope for the Hopeless‎‎

Ok here's the deal. My dog had major issues. (notice the past tense). I adopted a 2 year old Jack Russell Terrier from a rescue....2 weeks in I needed to be rescued. The super cute loving puppy we adopted showed us his real issues....Major leash reactivity attacking other dogs on walks and if prevented from doing so attacking me. His agression soon spread indoors...and ended up in me bleeding on several occasions and him eventually being expelled from a basic obedience class at another facility that shall remain un-named. I was honestly on the verge of giving him back up for adoption or maybe jumping off my balcony. When Hounds Fly was my last hope. From our first private session it clicked (pun intended). The methodology used makes sense and it has the credibility of scientific method behind it. Like many first time owners I was seduced by the quick fix, entertaining dominance theory of Caesar Milan...all it did was turn my dog into a monster. Agression bred agression. You will learn there are 2 warring worlds of dog training....aversive and positive re-inforcement. It can be very confusing. As someone who has explored both.... Trust me...go with positive re-enforcement. I never thought I would ever be able to walk my dog up to another dog without trauma happening... after 3 weeks with WHF we did just that. In retrospect the change is unbelievable. His agression has subsided and his outbursts are minimal and manageable. Yourdog will learn positive behaviours and more importantly you will learn positive behaviours...and how to respond and react to your dog. I know someone out there is having these kinds of problems....congratulations you found your saviour!

You and dog will be happier!‎‎

The great thing about Andre is that you quickly learn two crucial and interconnected lessons about your dog. First, you learn the most exciting and loving method to train your dog--positive reinforcement. Second, you learn that this method is the foundation for a lifetime of joy and friendship--something you can't put a price on. Andre is very professional, knowledgeable and up-to-date on trends. The school is really clean and his unit-based scheduling is uber compatible with a hectic lifestyle. If you're downtown the location is great. Even if you're not, I recommend driving in!! My puppy and I are best friends and I can thank Andre in no small part for helping make that happen.‎

  Excellent Experience‎‎

The location is excellent and accessible, the facility is clean and nice, and most importantly, Andre the trainer is super friendly and well-read on all the latest trends in positive reinforcement training and developments in dog behavioural research. During, and even after, our enrollment, Andre was always quick to respond to questions via e-mail and took the time to follow up to see how his suggestions were working. I can't recommend his puppy socialization class enough!

  Good trainer, good experience‎‎

I just finished puppy socialization classes and am also a big fan of Andre's. His methods, as mentioned in the other reviews, are all about positive reinforcement, and both my dog and I enjoyed being trained by him! I'll definitely be bringing her back for obedience classes.

  Terrific Trainer!‎‎

I've had the opportunity to work with Andre Yeu only twice so far, but am already a fan. He's great with dogs and people both, and it's a relief to find a trainer who doesn't use force, but rather sets up situations where the dog (and human) can truly learn. As Sandra noted in her review lots of schools claim to be positive but are not. When Hounds Fly is the real POSITIVE deal!

  Excellent dog training!‎‎

My husband and I registered our Jack Russell Terrier puppy at When Hounds Fly for the puppy socialization classes and then later on, for the adult obedience classes. We were both very happy with her results. Our breed is difficult to begin with, and can be a handful if not trained properly. Although I have had a JRT before, these classes helped refine my ability to train her. Andre is extremely kind, patient and helpful. He is truly great with the dogs and their owners. There are no "stupid questions", you are comfortable asking him anything. The homework exercises were also a great help in keeping thetraining relevant when you got home and gave you something to practice with your dog. You get print outs with tips and methods explaining your homework. I also must comment on the methods used - Andre practices the "clicker/positivetraining method" which is hard to find in Toronto. I have called other schools claiming to use clicker and positive training, and they have been a joke, just old school aggressive training tactics dressed up as clicker training. Andre's classes are the real genuine article. His methods are gentle and yield great results. If you are looking for positive training - this is the school for you and your puppy. The class sizes are small and intimate and your dog will benefit greatly from the socialization in a safe, controlled environment alongside gentle, caring training methods. I highly recommend this dog training school! -Sandra, Mike & "Buffy" :)‎‎‎‎
